What type of cooling to choose?

It depends on how many GPUs you need and GPU model.

  • 1x-2x NVIDIA RTX 3080, 3090 with no plans to add more in the future
    Air-cooling will work perfectly fine. Water-cooling is optional.

  • 1x-2x NVIDIA RTX 3080, 3090 with plans to add 1-2x more
    Due to the risk of overheating and the dimensions of the 30-Series GPUs, you cannot fit more than 2 GPUs maximum in an air-cooled workstation. This limitation applies to any air-cooled workstation from any supplier. Water-cooled workstations are the only option for supporting up to 4x 30xx-Series GPUs.
    You can customize a workstation with 2x GPUs and add two more in the future. With no need to ship your system back, the process is easy and fast.

  • 4x NVIDIA RTX 3080, 3090
    Water-cooling is mandatory. Due to the risk of overheating and dimensions of the 30-Series GPUs, you can not fit more than 2x GPUs in an air-cooled workstation.

  • 1-4x NVIDIA Professional RTX (A5000, A6000)
    Air cooling will work perfectly fine. Water cooling is optional. Important note: The most high-powered configurations, such as 4x NVIDIA A6000 and 4x A100, will be very noisy and hot. Water cooling is highly recommended.

  • 6-7x NVIDIA Professional RTX (A5000, A6000)
    Water-cooling is mandatory when using GPUs in a workstation (low noise level; office or lab use).
    Air cooling will work only in GPU servers (high noise level; a dedicated server room required).

  • 1-4x NVIDIA A100
    Water-cooling is mandatory when using GPUs in a workstation (low noise level; office or lab use).

General information about water-cooling
Bizon liquid-cooled workstation computers can handle 24/7/365 workloads by design. The liquid cooling loop uses enterprise-class components. It provides 24/7 stability, low noise, low temperatures, and long life for components with 100% performance out of the GPUs. Liquid cooling keeps the temperatures within a safe range of 50C–60C vs. 85-90C when air-cooled. No overheating. No thermal throttling. No performance drops.

Multi-GPU air-cooled workstations with NVIDIA RTX 3090, 3080, A6000, and A100 are extremely hot under a heavy load. When GPUs overheat, they activate thermal throttling mode (90C is the “red zone” where GPUs activate thermal throttling). Thermal throttling means that the fans can no longer dissipate heat sufficiently, so the graphics card starts to drop performance to protect itself from damage.
IMPORTANT: We have seen performance drops of up to 30-60% (!) due to overheating.

A water-cooled workstation is the only option if you are looking to support up to 4x NVIDIA RTX 30xx GPUs.

  • NVLink is no longer supported on the NVIDIA RTX 40 Series GPUs. Replacing NVLink is the PCIe Gen 5 standard, which will be sufficiently fast to connect multiple GPUs together.

RTX 30 Series and A-Series:
  • NVLINK is available for RTX 3090, 3090 Ti, A5000, A6000, and A100 GPUs only.
  • NVLink is a high-speed interconnect designed to allow multiple video cards (GPUs) to communicate directly with each other.
  • We have seen up to +15% performance increase when using NVLink with 2 x NVIDIA Quadro RTX (TensorFlow) compared to the same setup without NVLink.
  • Each additional NVLink will add up to +5% performance.
  • Example: For 4 GPUs you will get up to +20% performance. Numbers are for reference only and may vary depending on many factors.
  • One NVLink per 2 GPUs. NVLink is optional.
  • Performance increase and NVLINK support depend on software support. Some application does not have NVLink support and you won't see any performance difference. Check with the developers of your application if they have implemented or plan to add NVLink support.

Unparalleled cooling performance

We understand that noise level matters for the workstation you are using at home or office. Most workstations on the market are using big stock coolers that come with CPU and GPU. The fans run at a very high RPM and are quite loud. Air cooling is cheap and easy and doesn’t require special assembly knowledge. For a normal office PC air-cooling is fine, but when it comes to a multi-CPU workstation computer working at the maximum load 24/7 you can expect a very loud noise level, unstable performance and overheating issues .

BIZON ZX5000 comes with the custom-built liquid cooling system including cooling for CPU and all of the 4-7x GPUs. Do not mix it up with cheap CPU liquid cooling solutions that are designed for CPU cooling only. Keep in mind that most of the noise is generated by GPUs.

Air-cooled RTX 3090, A6000 (top-level GPUs) are extremely hot under the heavy load.
When GPUs are overheating they will activate thermal throttling mode (90C is the "red zone" where GPU activates thermal throttling).  Thermal throttling means that the fans can no longer dissipate heat and the graphics card starts to lower down the performance to protect itself.
IMPORTANT: We have seen up to 30-60% (!) performance drop due to overheating.
